If you want certain ships and high-tech wares, your ability to buy them depends on your reputation with the race you want to buy them from and your fighting status will affect some bigger ship purchases.

If you find you cannot buy a particular ship like an M2 class, then you do not have a high enough combat rank to deserve one.
